DEPARTMENT:   Library

REPORTS TO:  Librarian I – Membership Librarian

CLASSIFICATION STATUS: Part Time, Non-exempt

SALARY:  $15.00 hourly       

 

MAJOR FUNCTION:

This employee is responsible for shelving and stack maintenance of library materials, providing assistance at service desks and other library departments as needed, and creating a positive customer service experience for all library users.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides professional and courteous customer service in all in-person written, and telephone interactions with library members and peers.
  • Shelves, shelf reads, and maintains proper order of library materials.
  • Proactively restocks, clean, shelf reads and straightens shelves, furniture, and displays.
  • Answers directional questions or refers Librarians for specialized assistance.
  • Assists patrons with using the catalog and finding resources.
  • Assists at service desks, including circulation and youth areas, as needed.
  • Assists in processing reserve requests by pulling resources and notifying members.
  • Check in/out library resources and accepts payments for charges and fees.
  • Operates a variety of standard office equipment and library machines.
  • Maintains confidentiality of library membership records and processes library card applications.
  • Assists with the preparation of materials for library programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Pleasant, outgoing personality that likes responding to and taking care of people.
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with the ability to perform duties with moderate supervision following established procedures and deadlines.
  • Follows established procedures and deadlines while demonstrating a positive attitude in all situations with members and library peers.
  • Ability to use computer technology, library automation systems and office equipment.
  • Ability to produce and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate easily and clearly on the phone, in person, and in written correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and courteously with City employees, the Library Advisory Board, library members and other community members.
  • Knowledgeable of general office skills and tools including various technologies such as laptops, computers, e-readers, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Ability to learn and implement Library systems and procedures.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities at once while working effectively within a team model.
  • Skill in attention to detail and accuracy.

TRAINING, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED. One year of quality customer service experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to work nights and weekends. Weekly work schedule may vary due to demand staffing.  Meet FEMA requirement for NIMS certification.  Possess a valid Florida driver’s license.  Every New Port Richey employee is required to fill out a Disaster Response Survey and is subject to being required to report to work during a declared disaster.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical Ability:

This position requires the ability to walk, stand, bend or stoop, and stretch for most of the time; the ability to stand, walk, and stretch/bend for periods longer than 60 minutes, but usually not longer than four consecutive hours; the ability to perform routine keyboard operations; and the ability to occasionally climb stairs and ladders.  The employee must be able to push heavy book carts weighing up to 150 pounds and have the ability to lift, carry and put away parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.  The job has no significant exposure to environmental hazards.  The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.

Sensory Requirements:

Ability to hear, speak and understand conversations in English in various tones of voice. Adept at listening to and understanding others from a variety of cultural backgrounds.  Ability to see, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters or symbols, which are both large and small.  Ability to print draw letters, numbers, words, characters and symbols which are legible and understood by others. Ability to learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Administrative and other work is performed under typical office conditions and in every room of the Library where operations are conducted.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be noisy in open locations and programming areas.  By the very nature of public libraries, it is very busy, with shifting demands from the varied public.  Ability to deal with stress related to routine deadlines and occupational problems which demand immediate attention.  Necessity to multi-task successfully.  Ability to accept decisions made by others that may be in opposition of own views.
