DEPARTMENT: Police Department

REPORTS TO: A superior officer

CLASSIFICATION STATUS: Part Time – Seasonal, Non-Exempt

SALARY: $15.00 hourly

 

MAJOR FUNCTION:

To control traffic as necessary in order for children to safely cross the street while they are going to and from school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the major tasks performed within this classification.   It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class.  The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.  Specific tasks on a day to day basis will reflect the overall areas of expertise for this position.

  • Reports at specified times to assigned location, sets up traffic control markers and stands at school crossing to control the flow of traffic and pedestrians in order to maintain safety.
  • Employs whatever approved methods and procedures are necessary to encourage and enforce order among children crossing at that point and to control vehicular traffic.
  • Wears all safety equipment as issued.
  • Notices and reacts to errant drivers when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain discipline and order among young children of elementary through high school ages in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to employ prescribed methods of traffic control, including markers, hand signals, whistle, etc. as necessary to assure children’s safety and well-being.
  • Ability to work hours that coincide with daily opening and closing of the particular school(s) serviced by the assigned crossing, or as scheduled by the supervisor.

TRAINING, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and have some previous experience in dealing with people. Prior experience as a School Crossing Guard and knowledge of procedures and practices in school crossing is desired. Successfully pass the in-house School Crossing Guard program to include a field evaluation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.  Every New Port Richey employee is required to fill out a Disaster Response Survey and is subject to being required to report to work during a declared disaster.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical Ability:

This is light work and requires standing and moving about for prolonged periods of time. Position requires hearing to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Worker is subject to activities with no effective protection from weather changes or atmospheric conditions. Requires that incumbent utilize safety equipment in the performance of their duties because of noise and job hazards associated with position. MUTCD, Section 7E.03 outlines adult crossing guards should possess minimum requirements average intelligence, good physical condition, including sight, hearing and mobility, mental alertness, neat appearance, good character, dependability, sense of responsibility for safety of children.

 Sensory Requirements:

Peripheral vision is important. Visual acuity is required to perceive traffic and potential hazards. Worker is required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Required to stand for a minimum of one hour per shift and exposed to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and potentially dangerous environments.
