Council Responsibilities
The City Council
The City Council serves as the City's legislative body, consisting of five members, one of whom serves as Mayor and one of whom serves as Deputy Mayor. The City Council represents the residents of the City of New Port Richey by making legislative policy decisions. They are elected at large for three-year terms at non-partisan elections and hold office until their successors have been elected. The terms of office commence on the third Tuesday in the month of April when elected to office. The Deputy Mayor is elected from among their fellow Council Members. The City Charter prohibits any individual from serving more than nine (9) consecutive years as an elected city official.
As the city's legislative body, the City Council is authorized to pass ordinances and adopt resolutions as is determined necessary to carry out the duties of the city in the best interest of the residents and members of the business community. The City Council also acts on recommendations that are advanced from various City boards and committees. The City Council is bound to act in accordance with the City Charter and state law.
The City Council appoints the City Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the City. The City Council also appoints the City Attorney.

The council has the authority to initiate hearings for the purpose of gathering information for ordinance making and airing public problems and to supervise the spending of appropriations.
Vox Pop
The vox pop item at regular meetings of the City Council is an opportunity for citizens in the audience to address the City Council on matters that are not specifically listed on the agenda for that meeting. A person who wishes to speak to the City Council will be limited to a maximum of three minutes. Speakers must identify themselves prior to speaking by stating their name and address for the record.
