The City of New Port Richey Animal Protection Unit is a volunteer team functioning as an enforcement and administrative agency operating within the Police Department, to provide the citizens of New Port Richey with effective and cost efficient animal control services through active enforcement of state and local laws and the promotion of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Mission Statement

The Animal Protection Unit’s mission is to balance the health, safety and welfare needs of people and animals within the City of New Port Richey by:

  • Protecting the rights of people from the dangers and nuisances caused by stray and/or nuisance animals
  • Ensuring the legal protection of animals from mistreatment and cruelty
  • Implementing progressive programs in animal welfare, care and population control
  • Promoting, motivating and enforcing responsible pet ownership
  • Providing animal-related services to the citizens of the City of New Port Richey
  • Educating the public through presentations and public relations
  • Responding to questions citizens may have regarding animals and referring them as necessary to the correct party
  • Maintain an effective plan to reunite stray pets with owners and provide temporary shelter for stray, unwanted or homeless animals
  • Providing a vigorous adoption program through the assistance of various rescues
  • Humanely euthanize animals when necessary and appropriate
  • Enforce State, Federal and Local animal related laws

The Animal Protection Unit services the needs of the people and animals within the City of New Port Richey. Services provided include:

  • Animal control
  • Impound stray dogs
  • Investigate animal bites
  • Quarantine biting animals
  • Rescue animals in distress
  • Euthanize injured animals in a humane manner
  • Pick up and dispose of dead animals
  • Enforcement of the laws and ordinances regarding animals and handle citations
  • Assist with cruelty investigation and prosecution
  • Provide temporary shelter for stray and unwanted animals
  • Maintain an effective plan to reunite stray pets with owners and have vigorous adoption program in place 
  • Provide a pet licensing program
  • Provide public service talks and appearances to increase awareness on animal-related issues and pet overpopulation

Future plans include:

  • Actualize and maintain an effective trap-neuter-release (TNR) program
  • Promote and cultivate compliance through low cost vet services
  • Create a pet friendly environment in the Downtown
  • Animal related / themed events
  • Work with local restaurants on outdoor pet-friendly dining
